Meet Joshua…

Joshua Calhoun, MS, LPC Associate

Supervised by Dr. Larry Freeney, Jr., PhD, LPC-S

Joshua is a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate who earned a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Divine Mercy University and completed his bachelor’s degree in psychology at Texas A&M University. As a member of our team, he serves as a Wellness Counselor for students at St. Thomas High School in Houston.

Joshua has a heart for children, adolescents, and young adults and has worked with NET Ministries and Ablaze Ministries as a missionary youth minister. During his time with NET and Ablaze, he learned about the significance of the spiritual life and what it looks like to strive for virtue. He has made pilgrimages to Jerusalem, Mexico City, and Knock Shrine in Ireland, and he hopes to make it to Rome in the future. These holy expeditions have encouraged Joshua on his faith journey and inspired an admiration for other cultures, recognizing that God’s love and mercy are for everyone.

Joshua was raised Catholic and grew up in Texas with his 10 younger siblings. His upbringing led to a deep conviction about the Catholic faith and the sanctity of family life. He believes that God has a mission for families to bring about healing and conversion in our world. This mission places a great responsibility on family members and often means parents and their children feel the pressures of emotional, psychological, and spiritual challenges more deeply. Inspired by this perspective, Joshua utilizes a person-centered approach to counseling that is attentive to relationships and spirituality. This means that he tries to see his clients as uniquely created by God and called to relationship. Perhaps St. Therese put it best when she said, “I understood how all the flowers [Jesus] has created are beautiful, how the splendor of the rose and the whiteness of the lily do not take away the perfume of the little violet or the delightful simplicity of the daisy…if all flowers wanted to be roses, nature would lose her springtime beauty.” Joshua hopes to offer a meaningful human encounter to those who feel broken, overwhelmed, and alone amidst the difficulties of life.

Joshua’s other counseling interests include child and adolescent counseling, play therapy, and family systems. His dream is to someday incorporate his passion for retreat ministry into his work as a counselor. When Joshua is not occupied with counseling, he likes to read, listen to music and podcasts, spend time in nature, and enjoy time with family and friends. Some of his favorite authors include Tolkien, Lewis, MacDonald, and Tolstoy. He also has a deep love of learning and constantly seeks to better himself through study and reflection.
